01What is a headless CMS in 2026?
A headless CMS separates content storage and editorial UI from the presentation layer. 03Sanity: best DX, GROQ is unbeatable
Sanity is our default for most projects. Studio is a React app you customize in code - full type safety, custom workflows, real-time collaboration, image pipeline with hotspot/crop, and GROQ (a query language that beats GraphQL for complex queries). Pricing: free up to 10,000 documents, $15/mo per seat, $15 per 1M API requests. Sweet spot: marketing sites, content-heavy apps, editorial workflows. Weakness: no first-class GraphQL (you use GROQ), Studio setup is more dev-heavy than Contentful.
04Contentful: enterprise, pricey, polished
Contentful is the incumbent for enterprise. Polished UI, strong governance, roles, workflows, and an enterprise sales motion. Pricing: free up to 25,000 records, $300/mo Community, $1,000+/mo Premium. Weakness: the API is slow compared to Sanity or Hygraph, the editor UI is rigid, and the price escalates fast.
