Building a SaaS MVP is the highest-leverage activity in early-stage startups. Done right, an MVP in 90 days is the difference between a real company and an idea. Done wrong, it's 18 months of burn with no users. This is the playbook we use with our SaaS clients — from scoping to launch.

01Scoping: what goes in an MVP

An MVP is the smallest thing you can build that delivers your core value proposition to a paying user. The discipline: ruthlessly cut every feature that isn't required to validate your core hypothesis. Use the 'one-sentence test' — if you can't articulate how a feature gets a paying user, cut it. Most MVPs need 3–5 core features, not 15. Authentication, billing, one core workflow, and one secondary workflow. That's it. The rest is iteration after launch.

02Validation before code

Before writing any code, validate. (1) Talk to 20–30 potential customers — sell the MVP before it exists. If you can't get 10 verbal commitments, your positioning is wrong. (2) Build a Figma prototype and run 5 usability tests. (3) Write a PRD — a 1-page product requirements document that articulates the user, the problem, the solution, the success metrics, and the technical constraints. (4) Get a design partner — one customer who will pay 50% upfront in exchange for shaping the product. (5) Set a launch metric — e.g., 10 paying customers in the first 30 days post-launch.

03Tech stack for SaaS MVPs

Frontend: Next.js (App Router), React, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS. Backend: Node.js, tRPC or GraphQL, PostgreSQL, Prisma or Drizzle. Auth: Clerk, Auth.js, or WorkOS for SSO. Billing: Stripe (subscriptions, metered usage, trials, coupons, proration). Hosting: Vercel for the frontend, Railway or Render or Fly.io for the backend. Database: Supabase, Neon, or Railway Postgres. Email: Resend, Postmark. Analytics: PostHog or Mixpanel. Background jobs: Inngest or Trigger.dev. Monitoring: Sentry, Better Stack. AI: OpenAI, Anthropic. Don't use a no-code platform unless your MVP is a no-code platform.

04Team and roles

Three roles minimum: (1) a full-stack engineer or fractional CTO who can write the code and own the architecture; (2) a designer (full-time or fractional) who can ship a high-fidelity Figma prototype and the design system; (3) a founder/product person who owns the PRD, customer interviews, and launch. For a 90-day MVP, this is typically a 1–3 person team. Larger teams slow you down. We recommend a 2-person team (engineer + designer) plus the founder for most MVPs. Add a marketing person at month 3, not month 1.

05Build: 90-day timeline

Weeks 1–2: PRD, Figma prototype, technical architecture. Weeks 3–4: design system, auth, billing, database schema, deployment pipeline. Weeks 5–10: core workflow build (six weeks of two-week sprints, with demo at the end of each). Week 11: QA, security review, performance audit, design partner onboarding. Week 12: production launch, monitoring, on-call runbook. End of week 12: real users, real feedback, real iteration. The 90-day timeline assumes a 2-person engineering team and a defined scope. Add 4–6 weeks per additional major feature.

06Launch and iterate

Launch to 10–20 users first (design partners, beta list, personal network). Don't launch to the public until you have product-market signal. The first 30 days post-launch are for learning, not scaling. Talk to every user. Ship 2–3 features per week based on feedback. Measure: activation rate, weekly retention, NPS, conversion to paid. Iterate weekly. Public launch (Product Hunt, Hacker News, Twitter) at month 3–4 once you have retention data and a clear value prop. Charge from day one — free users don't validate, paying users do.

07Metrics that matter

The five metrics for an early-stage SaaS: (1) activation rate — % of signups who complete the core action within 7 days. Target: 40–60%. (2) weekly retention — % of users who come back in week 2. Target: 30–50% for B2B, 15–25% for B2C. (3) NPS — net promoter score. Target: 40+ for B2B, 30+ for B2C. (4) free-to-paid conversion — % of free users who upgrade. Target: 2–5% for self-serve, 15–30% for sales-assisted. (5) MRR growth — month-over-month. Target: 15–20% MoM for early-stage. Track these five. Ignore the rest.

Frequently asked questions

SaaS — quick answers

01How long does it take to build a SaaS MVP?
Most SaaS MVPs ship in 8–14 weeks (60–100 days) with a focused 2–3 person team. The 90-day timeline assumes a well-defined scope, a 2-person engineering team, and weekly iteration. More complex MVPs (multi-tenant, AI-native, regulated) take 4–6 months.
02How much does it cost to build a SaaS MVP?
SaaS MVPs typically cost $25,000–$100,000+ depending on scope, complexity, and team. With a fractional CTO and a part-time designer, you can ship a focused MVP for $25,000–$50,000. With a full-time in-house team, expect $80,000–$150,000 in salary + benefits for the same 90 days.
03What tech stack should I use for my SaaS MVP?
The 2026 default SaaS stack: Next.js + React + TypeScript + Tailwind on the frontend, Node.js + tRPC + PostgreSQL + Prisma on the backend, Clerk or Auth.js for auth, Stripe for billing, Vercel for hosting, PostHog for analytics, Sentry for monitoring. This stack is fast, well-supported, and scales from MVP to Series C without re-architecture.
04Should I build my SaaS MVP on no-code?
Only if your SaaS is a no-code platform. For everything else, no-code platforms (Bubble, Glide, Softr) have structural limitations — performance, customization, data ownership, and exit. They are great for prototyping and validation, but you'll outgrow them within 6–12 months and need to rebuild. Save the rebuild by starting with a real stack.
05When should I launch my SaaS?
Launch to 10–20 design partners at the end of the 90-day build, then iterate privately for 30–60 days. Public launch (Product Hunt, Hacker News, Twitter) at month 3–4 once you have retention data and a clear value prop. Don't launch publicly until you have evidence of product-market fit — public launches are hard to repeat.
