Shopify SEO Checklist: 47 Tweaks to Rank Your Store in 2026
A complete, copy-paste Shopify SEO checklist for 2026 — Product schema, CollectionPage schema, faceted-nav canonicals, site speed, image optimization, internal linking, and the 47 highest-leverage tweaks that move rankings.
Shopify is the most popular e-commerce platform on the planet — but most Shopify stores rank poorly because they ship with a default theme, default schema, and no SEO foundations. This 47-item checklist is the exact list we use when auditing Shopify stores for our clients. Each item has an estimated impact (high/medium/low) and effort (low/medium/high). Start at the top and work down.
01Foundations: theme, structure, and speed
1. Use a fast theme (Dawn, Sense, Refresh, or a custom theme; avoid bloated premium themes with 30+ apps). 2. Compress all images to WebP, serve responsive sizes, lazy-load below the fold. 3. Set up Cloudflare or Fastly in front of Shopify CDN. 4. Audit and remove unnecessary apps — every app adds JavaScript. 5. Use a custom domain (not yourstore.myshopify.com). 6. Enable SSL (free with Shopify). 7. Set up a flat navigation structure (3 levels max). 8. Use a logical URL structure: /collections/[category]/[product]. 9. Configure 301 redirects for any changed URLs. 10. Set up Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
02Product page SEO (1–10)
11. Unique product title with primary keyword near the start. 12. Meta description with commercial intent (150–160 chars, includes price or USPs). 13. H1 tag matches the product title. 14. 300+ word product description with semantic keyword variations, use cases, and specifications. 15. Alt text on every product image, descriptive (not 'image1.jpg'). 16. Product schema (JSON-LD) — name, image, description, sku, brand, price, availability, review. 17. Customer reviews (judge.me, Yotpo, Loox) with aggregateRating schema. 18. FAQ schema on the product page. 19. Internal links from product → collection, blog post, related products. 20. BreadcrumbList schema.
03Collection page SEO (21–28)
21. Unique collection title and meta description (don't auto-generate from product names). 22. 200+ word intro paragraph on every collection page, including target keyword. 23. CollectionPage schema (JSON-LD). 24. Faceted navigation with canonical tags pointing to the canonical filtered URL (avoid duplicate content). 25. Pagination with rel='next' and rel='prev' (Shopify does this automatically with the newer themes). 26. 'Sort by' parameters blocked from indexing via canonical. 27. Internal links to related collections at the bottom. 28. Image alt text on collection hero image.
04Schema markup (29–34)
29. Organization schema in the footer or theme.liquid. 30. WebSite schema with SearchAction. 31. LocalBusiness schema if you have a physical store. 32. Product schema on every product page (see #16). 33. FAQPage schema on category and product pages with FAQs. 34. BreadcrumbList schema on every page (Shopify has this built-in but verify). Validate every page with Google's Rich Results Test.
05Content: blog, guides, FAQs (35–38)
35. Publish 2–4 blog posts per month targeting informational queries in your niche. 36. Create 'best of' roundup posts linking to your product collections. 37. Create a sizing guide, materials guide, or buying guide for every product category. 38. Add an FAQ section to your main pages (homepage, about, shipping) with FAQPage schema.
06Internal & external links (39–42)
39. Internal links from every blog post to relevant product or collection pages. 40. Internal links from every product to 3–5 related products. 41. 'You might also like' recommendations powered by AI (Shopify's built-in, or LimeSpot, or ReConvert). 42. Build 5–10 backlinks per month from DR40+ sites in your niche (digital PR, guest posts, HARO).
07Speed and Core Web Vitals (43–45)
43. LCP < 2.5s, INP < 200ms, CLS < 0.1. 44. Remove unused JavaScript (audit with Lighthouse and PageSpeed Insights). 45. Use Shopify's built-in image optimization (size_url, crop) — never serve the original image.
08AI citability (GEO) (46–47)
46. Add llms.txt to your root (Shopify supports custom robots.txt and any static asset). 47. Add structured data that makes products citable by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews — product name, brand, key specs, USPs, price, and unique statistical claims in product descriptions.
Frequently asked questions
Shopify — quick answers
- 01Is Shopify good for SEO?
- Shopify is one of the better e-commerce platforms for SEO out of the box: it generates sitemaps, has clean URLs, supports SSL, and ships with basic schema. However, it has known limitations (no canonical tags on faceted nav, no granular control over crawl budget, theme-level bloat). Most serious Shopify brands need a developer to optimize beyond the defaults.
- 02How do I add schema markup to Shopify?
- You can add JSON-LD schema to Shopify in three ways: (1) edit theme.liquid to add a global Organization schema; (2) use a schema app (JSON-LD for SEO, SEO Manager); (3) hand-code per-page schema in product.liquid, collection.liquid, etc. We recommend a hybrid — global schema in the theme, per-page schema in the templates.
- 03How long does Shopify SEO take?
- Technical fixes (schema, speed, redirects) show results within 4–8 weeks. Content and link building: 3–6 months. Most of our Shopify clients see 2–5x organic traffic growth within 6 months.
- 04Should I use Shopify or headless Shopify for SEO?
- Standard Shopify is fine for most stores. Headless Shopify (Hydrogen) gives you more control over speed, design, and SEO — but adds 3–5x the engineering cost. We recommend headless only for stores doing $1M+ in revenue or with very specific UX/SEO requirements.
- 05Does Shopify generate sitemaps?
- Yes. Shopify auto-generates sitemap.xml at yourstore.com/sitemap.xml. Submit it to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Shopify's sitemap is comprehensive — it includes products, collections, pages, and blog posts.
