Migrating an e-commerce store to Shopify is one of the highest-leverage projects you can do - most clients see a 20-40% conversion lift within 90 days - but it is also the project most likely to destroy years of SEO equity if done wrong. We have migrated 30+ stores from WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, and custom platforms. This is the playbook: the 6-week timeline, the redirect strategy, the data sync, the schema preservation, and the post-launch verification that ensures you do not lose rankings.

01When it makes sense to migrate

Migrate when: (1) your current platform is causing developer pain - security patches, broken plugins, slow load times, (2) your conversion rate has plateaued below 2% and you suspect platform limitations, (3) total cost of ownership (hosting + plugins + developer time) exceeds $1,500/mo, (4) you want access to Shopify app ecosystem, payments, and POS, (5) you want headless flexibility with Hydrogen. Do not migrate when: you are in a peak revenue season, your current stack works and you just need a redesign (consider a theme change instead), or your products/customers/orders are too complex to model (we will do an audit first).

02Pre-migration audit: SEO, data, integrations

Week 1 of a migration is purely audit. We pull: (1) all indexed URLs from Google Search Console and Bing, (2) top 200 ranking keywords with positions, (3) backlink profile from Ahrefs or Semrush, (4) current product catalog (count, variants, SKUs, images), (5) customer and order history (count, last 24 months), (6) active integrations (email, ERP, accounting, reviews, subscriptions), (7) current load times and Core Web Vitals. This becomes the migration spec. The audit typically costs $1,500-$3,000 and is deductible from the build if you proceed.

03URL mapping and 301 redirects

The single most important technical step. Every URL on the old site must map to a URL on the new Shopify site with a 301 redirect. We generate a CSV with old_url, new_url, type, and notes. Categories map to /collections/, products to /products/, blog posts to /blogs/, pages to /pages/. We use Shopify URL redirect feature for the first 10,000 redirects; beyond that, we use a third-party app or Cloudflare Workers. We test 100% of redirects with a crawler (Screaming Frog) before launch. A typical migration has 800-5,000 redirects - every one must work.

04Migrating products, customers, orders

Three streams. (1) Products - Shopify CSV importer handles up to 50,000 SKUs. We map fields, validate images, and clean variants. (2) Customers - we use the customer importer; password hashes are not portable, so customers must reset passwords (we email them a reset link on launch day). (3) Orders - historical orders are usually preserved read-only in Shopify (we use a custom app or the order import API). For WooCommerce, the Cart2Cart app handles 95% of cases; for Magento, we use a custom migration script.

05Preserving schema markup and SEO equity

Schema is what protects your SEO. We add Product, Offer, BreadcrumbList, Organization, LocalBusiness (if applicable), FAQ, Review, and Article schema to every relevant page. We preserve Open Graph and Twitter card tags. We preserve canonical URLs. We set up hreflang for multi-language stores. We add llms.txt and llms-full.txt. We submit the new sitemap to Google Search Console and Bing. We monitor index coverage daily for the first 30 days and fix any errors. The expected result: rankings recover to pre-migration baseline within 4-8 weeks, then lift as Shopify performance and CDN kick in.

06Post-launch verification checklist

Day 1, 7, 30, 90. Day 1: test 100 redirects, test checkout end-to-end with real card, test search and filters, test mobile, check Search Console for crawl errors, verify analytics and conversion tracking. Day 7: monitor organic traffic and rankings, fix any index coverage issues, check page speed (aim for 95+ Lighthouse). Day 30: full SEO audit, broken link check, schema validation, backlink preservation audit, comparison of pre/post traffic. Day 90: ROI report - conversion rate, AOV, organic traffic, revenue, total cost of ownership. Most clients see break-even by month 3 and positive ROI by month 6.

Frequently asked questions

Shopify — quick answers

01How long does a Shopify migration take?
A standard migration: 4-6 weeks for stores under 500 products and 10,000 URLs. Larger stores with custom functionality: 8-12 weeks. We work in two parallel tracks: data migration (products, customers, orders) and theme/development migration.
02Will I lose my Google rankings if I migrate to Shopify?
If you implement 301 redirects correctly, preserve schema markup, and submit a new sitemap, you should recover to pre-migration rankings within 4-8 weeks. Most clients see a 15-30% lift in organic traffic within 90 days because Shopify CDN, image optimization, and Core Web Vitals are superior to most legacy platforms.
03Can I migrate subscriptions and customer accounts?
Yes. We use Shopify native subscription API or apps like Recharge, Bold, or Appstle. For customer accounts, we use the customer importer; password hashes are not portable, so customers will be emailed a one-time password reset link. We preserve order history and store credit where possible.
04What about my blog content?
We use the Shopify blog importer (free for most cases) or a custom script for large blogs. We preserve URLs, images, tags, authors, and publish dates. We add redirects for any URL changes. We add Article and Person schema to every blog post. We add llms.txt entries for the blog.
05How much does a Shopify migration cost?
Standard migration (WooCommerce to Shopify, under 500 products): $5,000-$10,000. Complex migration (Magento to Shopify, custom integrations, multi-store): $15,000-$30,000. We always include the pre-migration SEO audit, redirect mapping, data import, schema preservation, and post-launch verification in our fixed bid.
