Most SEO checklists are 200 items long and you do 30 of them. This is the 47 that actually move rankings in 2026 - the ones we run on every client engagement, in the order we run them, with the pass/fail thresholds we use. We have audited 100+ sites over 15 years; this is the short list that delivers 90% of the value.

01Crawlability: can Googlebot see your pages?

First, can Googlebot even reach your pages? (1) robots.txt is not blocking important pages (test in Search Console URL Inspection). (2) Sitemap.xml exists, is valid, and references all canonical URLs. (3) Internal link graph has no orphan pages (every page is linked from at least 2 other pages). (4) Faceted nav and search results are not creating infinite crawl traps. (5) 4xx/5xx errors are below 1% of crawled URLs. (6) Server response time is under 600ms TTFB globally. (7) Render budget - no JavaScript-only content that requires 5+ round trips. (8) AI crawlers - OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot are allowed in robots.txt. Tools: Screaming Frog, Sitebulb, Lumar, Google Search Console.

02Indexability: are your pages indexable?

Second, are the right pages indexed? (1) Every important page has a self-referential canonical. (2) Paginated pages use rel=next/prev or a single canonical view-all. (3) Parameter URLs are canonicalized. (4) Thin content (under 300 words) is either noindex, merged, or expanded. (5) Duplicate content (above 80% similarity) is canonicalized or rewritten. (6) Faceted nav variants are canonicalized to the primary URL. (7) Noindex tags are correct on staging, internal search, and admin pages. (8) International pages use hreflang and x-default. (9) AMP (if you still use it) is valid. (10) Index coverage in Search Console is monitored weekly. Goal: index coverage rate above 95%.

03Core Web Vitals: LCP, INP, CLS

Third, does the page feel fast? (1) LCP under 2.5s for 75% of users (mobile). (2) INP under 200ms for 75% of users (mobile). (3) CLS under 0.1 for 75% of users. (4) LCP element is preloadable - typically an image or hero text, not a third-party widget. (5) Images are next-gen (WebP/AVIF), responsive (srcset), and lazy-loaded below the fold. (6) Fonts are subset, preloaded, and use font-display: swap. (7) Third-party scripts are deferred or loaded on idle. (8) CSS is critical-only inlined; rest is deferred. (9) JavaScript bundle is under 100KB gzipped on mobile. (10) Edge caching is configured (Vercel, Cloudflare, Fastly). Test in CrUX (Chrome User Experience Report) and PageSpeed Insights.

04Schema and structured data

Fourth, are your entities defined? (1) Organization schema on every page (with logo, sameAs, contactPoint). (2) LocalBusiness schema on location pages. (3) Product, Offer, and AggregateRating on product pages. (4) FAQ schema on pages with question/answer content. (5) HowTo schema on step-by-step content. (6) Article, BlogPosting, and Person schema on blog posts. (7) BreadcrumbList on every page. (8) WebSite schema with SearchAction for sitelinks searchbox. (9) Course, Event, Recipe, Video as applicable. (10) Schema is validated in Schema.org Validator and Rich Results Test. Goal: 100% of pages have at least one valid schema type.

05Internal linking and information architecture

Fifth, can crawlers and humans navigate? (1) Site architecture is 3 clicks deep max. (2) Top pages (by traffic and conversions) receive the most internal links. (3) Hub pages link to all spoke pages; spoke pages link back to hub. (4) Anchor text is descriptive, not click here. (5) Footer links are limited to 30-50, not 200. (6) Breadcrumbs are present on every page. (7) Related content modules link to genuinely related pages, not random. (8) Internal links use absolute URLs (helps with redirects and HTTPS). (9) XML sitemap priority is aligned with internal link authority. (10) Topic clusters are organized by pillar pages and supporting content.

06GEO layer: llms.txt, schema, AI crawlability

Sixth, can AI engines find and cite you? (1) /llms.txt exists and links to /llms-full.txt. (2) /llms-full.txt is comprehensive, plain text, no JS rendering. (3) robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended. (4) Every page has a clear author entity (Person schema with sameAs, knowsAbout, alumniOf). (5) Content includes statistical specificity, named entities, dates, and direct quotes. (6) Brand is mentioned on third-party authoritative sites (Wikipedia, news, industry publications). (7) Original research or data exists that others can cite. (8) Same content has multiple URLs in case one is de-indexed. (9) Most-cited phrases appear in the first 100 words of each page. (10) Topic authority is built via topic clusters, not isolated keywords.

07Tools and reporting

The stack. (1) Google Search Console - must-have, free, source of truth. (2) Bing Webmaster Tools - second source, less crowded. (3) Ahrefs or Semrush - keyword research, backlink profile, competitor analysis. (4) Screaming Frog - technical crawl up to 500 URLs free. (5) PageSpeed Insights + CrUX - Core Web Vitals. (6) Schema.org Validator + Rich Results Test - schema validation. (7) GTmetrix or WebPageTest - waterfall analysis. (8) Loggly or OnCrawl - server log analysis for advanced. (9) Custom dashboard - we build ours in Looker Studio pulling GSC, GA4, and rank trackers. Report monthly: index coverage, top 50 keyword positions, organic traffic, conversions, technical errors.

Frequently asked questions

SEO & GEO — quick answers

01How long does a technical SEO audit take?
A thorough audit takes 8-16 hours of expert time and produces a 30-50 page report. We deliver within 5 business days. The audit costs $1,500-$3,000 for a single site and is deductible from the engagement if you proceed with implementation.
02What is the most important technical SEO factor?
In 2026, it is a tie between (1) Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS) - directly impacts rankings, and (2) schema markup and entity SEO - directly impacts AI citations. Both are required. Crawlability and indexability are table stakes.
03How often should I run a technical SEO audit?
Quarterly for active sites. Monthly monitoring of index coverage, top 50 keyword positions, and Core Web Vitals. Major audit after any redesign, migration, or content overhaul. We include quarterly audits in our monthly retainers.
04Do I need to block AI crawlers?
No - block training crawlers (GPTBot, CCBot, Meta-ExternalAgent) but allow search/answer crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended). The first are used to train models; the second are used to power ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Claude search, Google AI Overviews, and Apple Intelligence. Allowing the second group is the largest GEO opportunity of 2026.
05What is llms.txt and do I need it?
llms.txt is an emerging standard (proposed by Jeremy Howard in 2024) that gives AI crawlers a curated map of your site in plain text. llms-full.txt is the extended version with full content. Both are crawled by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and other AI engines. Yes, you need both. We implement them on every engagement.
